Movie Review :: Inception

So does anyone remember a rather scathing review I gave to The Last Airbender?  My biggest problem with that movie was that the story simply wasn’t told.  The story of Ang, the Avatar and Last Airbender was right before them- a great story that didn’t actually make it to the screen.

Well, if you’ve seen Inception, you’ll know what I’m about to say.  Inception is the hallmark of a well told story.  The characters were developed.  They underwent a significant change.  Their back stories were complete and evenly unfolded.  Only enough of the back story was told to you to get you through that specific moment, the rest was saved until it was needed.  This story was original, thought provoking, and peaked the interest of where we might find ourselves in the very near future.  I would say we haven’t seen a movie of this magnitude since The Matrix back in the 90’s (that is NOT to say that this movie is like the Matrix in substance or story).

Setting that aside, the special effects were amazing, yet they didn’t overtake the movie as it did with Avatar.  The zero gravity fight scene simply blew my mind.  I, for one, can’t wait for the DVD so that I can see the special features and find out how they did it.

Of course, none of this would have been possible with out the stellar cast, led by Leonardo

DiCaprio.  Here is an actor that has certainly grown into his own.  Of course being supported by the likes of Michael Cane and Ellen Page didn’t hurt at all.  Top it off with directing by Chris Nolan of Batman Begins, and its a recipe for success.  Inception certainly was a success.  If you haven’t seen it yet, get to the theater and see it.  If you have, go again.  You’ll catch a ton more the second time around.  I know I did.
